Fall Racing Results

WMRC had impressive results at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 18, 2008. The Varsity Women’s 4+ medaled in the Collegiate Four event, coming in 4th out of 34 crews. Congratulations to the winning lineup of Lindsey Grunow, Olivia Walch, Anne Maynard, Jennifer Whitten, and Jenn Hatch. The women have secured an automatic bid to the 2009 Head of the Charles Regatta with their outstanding results.

Members of the Friends of Williamsburg Rowing have been quite active on the racing scene this fall as well. A few weeks ago, alumni from the men’s team, including Travis Moore, Stephen Woodward, Matt Connell, Mark Miller, and JT Blau competed in the Championship 4+ event at the Occoquan Challenge. This coming weekend, members of the men’s team will compete alongside of WMRC. On November 1st, a men’s alumni 8+ will compete at the Head of the Occoquan. It is wonderful to see such regular and enthusiastic activity from recent graduates!

This past weekend, members of FWR supported both Williamsburg Boat Club and the William & Mary Rowing Club at the Head of the Lafayette in Norfolk, VA. Both clubs raced 8+s and 4+s in the women’s, men’s, and mixed categories. The teams had strong showings and impressive results in each of their events. WMRC’s main competition was Old Dominion University, while the Williamsburg Boat Club went up against the Hampton Roads Rowing Club. FWR provided Subway sandwiches for the team following the races. It was a great opportunity for rowers, alumni, and community members to gather for a beautiful day on the Lafayette River.

Occoquan Sprints Results & Meeting

Thanks to all those who were able to make it out to Occoquan Sprints last weekend. About 15 alumni were able to make it out last weekend, spanning the classes of 2007 to 2003.

The weekend was filled with great events for alumni and the team. On Saturday evening, Friends of Williamsburg Rowing (FWR) put on a dinner for the entire team and some parents. Dinner was followed by an FWR meeting with alumni, parents, and William and Mary Coaches and Officers. It was a great forum for each group to discuss what they want out of FWR and how FWR can best serve the team.

On Saturday everyone headed out to the Occoquan to watch the team race in the first sprint regatta of the season. Despite the rather chilly weather, it was a great day of racing. Congratulations to the Heavyweight Men's 2 who finished 1st in their event. Congrats to the Women's Varsity 8+ who finished 4th in the grande final, only 0.6 seconds behind Loyola.

The Women's Novice 8+ took first in the petite final. The Men's Novice 8+ finished fourth in their event, less than 2 seconds behind Duke. The Men's Varsity 8+ finished 3rd in the petite final, just 1.6 seconds behind Maryland.

Thanks again for everyone who traveled to join us for this event. It was definitively a success and we hope to have many more in the future. Stay tuned for more alumni and team events!

Head of the Occoquan

The William & Mary Rowing Club will be at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia on November 3rd & 4th. While the alumni boat we were trying to put together didn't get an entry, it'd still be great to have alumni Support. The newest addition to the William & Mary fleet, the recent Vespoli 4+ purchased with the help of the W&M Rec Sports department, will be rowing for the first time with a name!

Equipment Shed

FWR has just made a $1015 down-payment on a Crutchman 12 foot by 18 foot barn-style shed for use by both WMRC and WBC. The shed itself will be property of WMRC as the Department of Rec Sports at the College will pay the remaining $3,000. This will be a major improvement for rowing in Williamsburg. The shed will mainly store oars, but will also have room for motor storage, tools and spare parts. This will help make both clubs equipment safer, cleaner and help it last far into the future. View pictures of the shed on our Photos Page.
